Boston Dynamics Big Dog Robot

It’s inevitable that the military will be implementing more and more robotics into the art of war.  Robots can simply do things that we can’t.  But, on the flip side, robots still have a hard time doing some tasks that we find mundane and easy.  This robot, aptly named Big Dog, was developed under a partnership with DARPA (ie, $10mil).

The quadruped can actually right itself and balance under amazing conditions.  For instance, early on someone pushes it with their leg and it compensates.  I was pretty stunned when I saw it do that.  But when it managed to walk over ice laden asphalt, I was totally shocked.  People have a hard time doing that.  And here is a robot doing it well.  Oh, and with like 300 lbs. in tow while doing it.  And that is this units basic function - moving things like a pack mule.
