The above photo is a possible ball lightning sighting.  I believe it was take in Japan and caught on film by accident.  Ball lightning is still in the category of unproven. That’s because ball lightning is very rare and seemingly unpredictable. But stories persist and some videos seem to indicate its existence.

Ball lightning is simply a persistent ball of energy during a thunderstorm. It can last several seconds and usually drifts horizontally. The characteristics seem to change with different sightings, which could be possible. And there are many different theories about how ball lightning is made. One such theory is states that silica in the earth’s soil can become vaporized and produce energy balls similar to ball lightning. Another states that it is trapped microwave energy. In fact, there are some online pages that show you how to create ball lightning in your own microwave and to understand how microwave ball lightning works.

There are also historical accounts of witnessing ball lightning. One such account involves a church in England:

One of the earliest and most destructive occurrences was reported during The Great Thunderstorm at a church in Widecombe-in-the-Moor, Devon, in England, on October 21, 1638. Four people died and approximately 60 injured, when during a severe storm, an 8′ ball of fire struck and entered the church, nearly destroying it. Large stones from the church walls were hurled into the ground and through large wooden beams. The ball of fire smashed the pews and many windows, and filled the church with a foul sulfurous odor and dark, thick smoke.

The ball of fire reportedly split in two, one exiting through a window by smashing it open, the other disappearing somewhere inside the church. The explanation at the time, because of the fire and sulfur smell, was that the ball of fire was “the devil” or the “flames of hell”. Later, some blamed the entire incident on two people who had been playing cards in the pew during the sermon, whom they say must have invoked God’s wrath.” (Source: Wikipedia)

And here are some purported videos of ball lightning:

This first one seems interesting

This second one is harder to spot, but it happens right between the houses near ground level.  It seems to run up a fence and telephone pole.
