Metal Gear Box Hard Drive Enclosure Review

By admin | May 30, 2008

I don’t really get excited about hard drive enclosures. They tend to be more function and not much form. But the Metal Gear Box Substance II enclosure is great. Now, I will say that I replaced a horrid enclosure. That enclosure was cheap, noisy, and flaky. This enclosure is pretty [...]

AutoIt Automates Mundane Admin Tasks

By admin | May 29, 2008

Yesterday I needed a simple way to automate an install process for a client. The cost savings for me to do this would be substantial. This is both in terms of flight and accommodation costs and administrative costs on their end. The software vendor was pretty unresponsive to our need for a [...]

Nasty Adobe Flash Player Exploit

By admin | May 28, 2008

You need to be aware that a particularly nasty exploit is being actively exploited in the wild.  The actual exploit and vulnerability is not being disclosed.  I’m assuming this is because Adobe and others are working on the problem.  It seems that many thousands of sites have been exploited by means of a SQL injection [...]

Fixing Stuck and Dead Pixels

By admin | May 27, 2008

There is nothing more annoying than turning on your newer 22 inch HD monitor to find stuck or dead pixels.  Stuck pixels are usually colored pixels that are frozen on a specific color.  Dead pixels are usually without color and hence muerto.  Don’t tolerate insubordinate pixels!  Smack them back into line with these techniques and [...]

Iomega Ego Leather Bound External Hard Drive

By admin | May 26, 2008

For the discerning mobile user, hardware needs an extra something.  They don’t want a horrid looking box to tote around.  Iomega serves up the Ego external hard drive with leather case.  I had to do a double take to make sure it didn’t hold whiskey.

OpenMeetings Free Video Conferencing Software

By admin | May 21, 2008

I’ve been busy, nestled away in my testing area. Next up to bat is the excellent software OpenMeetings. Openmeetings is free video conferencing software that allows you to chat via video, to do whiteboarding, to convert documents on the fly, etc. It even allows you to share your desktop.

Maybe I should have said Iron Man, given the recent box office success.  But the moniker “Rocket Man” seems much more appropriate.  Yves Rossy is a former fighter pilot who now flies around the alps on a homemade rocket suit.  Gotta love it.

VirtualBox Open Source Virtualization

By admin | May 14, 2008

I have played around with virtualization a little. But I wanted to dive in a little deeper. Soooo, what better way to do that than pick up some free software (Ubuntu and VirtualBox!) and have at it? That’s exactly what I did and I thought I would share my initial impressions.

Netgear WNDR3300 Wireless N Wireless Router

By admin | May 12, 2008

The Netgear WNDR3300 Wireless N router is a pretty interesting, cheap alternative in the wireless N space. It sports 8 micro antennas for superior coverage and supports simultaneous 2.4GHZ and 5GHZ connections for wireless G and wireless N respectively. That way you can get 54Mbps and 300Mbps simultaneously. Though the real world [...]

Linksys WRT160N Ultra RangePlus Wireless-N Broadband Router

By admin | May 7, 2008

I recently got my hands on this little beauty. It’s a nice router (WRT160N) for a bunch of reasons, partly for the looks. It has a stateful packet inspection (SPI) firewall, VPN pass through, easy wifi protected setup mode (i’ll explain that later), 256bit WPA2 encryption, and 248Mb/second! Drooooool.
