An investment in a security system is like putting a central vac system. You can’t take it with you. Well, I guess you could cut all the wires and pull the units, but that would be stupid. In any case, LaserShield is doing away with that by providing a personal security system that you could take with you.
The basic system is comprised of the base unit (speaker and panic button), 1100 square foot infrared detection box, and two key chains. Each device is equipped with battery backup in case of power failure. You hook the base unit into the phone line for monitoring (more on this later). The system is expandable. You can add more infrared devices as you need them. Each infrared device costs $60. Additional keychains cost $25. The unit features most of the things you come to expect out of a security system. The one gripe I have read about these systems was that it was phone line dependent. Well, they came out with a GSM based box that can be added to the system so that’s not the case. That runs about $230 and is called Cyclone. There is a digital phone option as well, called the Sparrow, that costs $130 extra.
Monitoring runs $20 a month, but is $30 a month with the Cyclone in place. This service would be great for college students or for use in apartments and the like.
