No one likes to have their stuff stolen. But getting a laptop stolen can be even more malicious, as it probably contains a lot of personal information. A free, open-source software package called Adeona aims to put tracking tools into your hands - and put the thieves on the defensive.
Adeona is a simple piece of software that you can install on your laptop. When installing, you enter a password and are issued retrieval credentials. You will need to store that somewhere you can access it if your laptop is ever stolen. Then you can go about your business and hopefully never use it again.
But, if your laptop is stolen, Adeona will be sending routine network information to the OpenDHT servers. OpenDHT is an open source, distributed hash table service. In any case, you can then use the retrieval program, with your saved user credentials, and start retrieving information about where your laptop is. It currently doesn’t include geolocation in the software, but you can obtain that information elsewhere. Hint: see their documentation.
The software is available for Windows, Mac, and linux. If you’re on a Mac it also can use isightcapture to take pictures of your thieves. That might come in handy with the police. Adeona is free, in case you were wondering.
