G.ho.st is Apparitional Operating System

By admin | Jul 16, 2008

ghost-screen1.jpgIt appears only when you need it and then magically appears at your next location.  That’s the advantage of a virtual operating system like G.ho.st.  I’m already sick of that punctuation, like del.icio.us.  Anyway, this is a browser operating system that you can access from any network.  That makes it an interesting, er, app, to use for different situations.

The screenshot above was taken inside my virtual OS.  You can boot your virtual OS up anywhere that you have internet access.  The OS has a 5GB virtual disk to store anything you want.  It also includes a 3GB G.ho.st email account.  You can FTP documents up to your virtual OS for viewing photos, docs, etc.  It also utilizes Zoho for documents. And you can access Google docs.  Want to keep your favorites with you in an easy fashion?  Just use the browser within G.ho.st.  Want to have your music? Use the MP3 player or Internet radios Last.fm & Pandora.

I was also impressed with the layout of the OS.  Windows users will immediately feel comfortable.  It has desktop widget, a familiar task bar layout, desktop RSS feeds, etc.  Oh, and, it also has various chat programs and games as well.  You can also customize the desktop and look and feel of the OS.  Very cool.

Please note that G.ho.st is also opening up to the community and has already open-sourced its mobile client at: http://code.google.com/p/pixie-os/ including the entire collaboration suite (email, contacts, calendar), file system, RSS feeds, webmarks (launched through Google Mobilizer), search etc. Same client, btw, can also be used as a widget and a browser plugin (e.g. through XUL).

What’s really nice here is that users can join the project and add their own features!
