Well, the tropics are getting very active again. The latest is hurricane Gustav, which became a tropical storm again, and will soon be restored to hurricane status. It ravaged Haiti and made some really troubling moves last night.
By the way, I added a weather radar page that features a really cool widget. In any case, Gustav pounded Hispianola in the last few days and killed 22. That’s flooding deaths from 8+ inches of rain and the mountainous regions found there. Those mountains did a good number on Gustav. The radar echoes and satellite images show a very ragged storm and the eye or center of circulation were very hard, if not impossible to find.
But this morning the satellite features have ballooned and become very impressive. And the center of circulation has emerged further south than it seemed to appear when near Haiti. Here is the NOAA satellite loop:
So Jamaica was issued a special hurricane notice this morning. The other problem with hurricane Gustav is the new model runs. Gustav will be moving over very warm heat content water for most of its life now, unless something drastic happens. This also includes a very warm eddy in the Gulf. Look at the path swath of the latest model runs, courtesy of Weather Underground:
The center of that cone is auspiciously honing on New Orleans. And, all indications are showing a Category 3 or 4 hurricane in the Gulf of Mexico early next week. Preparations better already be underway for those areas - especially if later model runs continue to show agreement around that area. The other big question will be the oil disruption from this storm. If those models pan out, it’s going to make prices much tougher.
