Advances in technology have allowed for a massive explosion of collaboration and sharing.  But sharing isn’t solely in the domain of ideas.  Once just the turf of hardware hacks, larger scale mesh networking is now coming online.  The first major player was Meraki, but they started upping prices, etc.  And now a new, open player has arrived.  And its name is Open-Mesh.

So, why in the world would you want to do a mesh network?  Well, there are all sorts of reasons for doing a mesh network really.  First is cost.  You can band together with other people and bring down the TCO of an internet connection.  You could also extend internet access to less fortunate regions of your city.  Or maybe you want to set up access for a school overseas.  You could also provide wireless to your apartment complex.  Whatever your reasons, Open-Mesh gives you an easy, flexible, and extensible solution to fit your needs.

The Open-Mesh routers allow for and unencrypted and WPA encrypted signal to be dispersed simultaneously.  You can create custom splash screens and watch user’s bandwidth usage.  Plans are in the works to allow for user authentication and billing.  This would be great in an apartment complex.  You can also throttle user’s connections.  This keeps users from hogging bandwidth from everyone.  The setup is really simple.  You have a router and you have repeaters.  Repeaters augment the signal throughout an area for coverage.  Pretty neat.
