2010 Honda Insight Kicks Detroit and Toyota in Groin

It’s always nice when you have just received a notice of 30% or more downward sales notice.  But it’s so good when you turn around and Honda kicks you in the groin about the future.  That’s because Honda (that secretive and elusive animal) shocked everyone by showing off the 2010 Insight concept.  And, if the production model comes in anywhere close or better, this thing will be a great car.

So, the first thing that stands out about the concept is the purported price.  This new Insight (er, a dust off of the old namesake) will supposedly cost $18,500.  It also sports a 5 seat design.  Honda is obviously aiming at the mainstream with this new iteration.  And they are also setting their sites firmly at the Toyota Prius, especially with that price tag.

People are complaining about the styling of the Insight, but I like it.  If you look at the head on shots of the car, it looks a lot like the newer Acura lines.  And I really like the lighted accents.  They are not ostentatious, but allow for a tech feel to the whole thing.  I also like the interior digital panels.

I’ve heard fuel economy estimates upward of 71mpg, but I will believe it when it goes into production.  In any case, I like the concept so far.  Seems that people are going gaga over the Volt though.  Maybe it will be Chevy’s turn to kick Honda in the groin?  Well, 2010 should be an interesting year.
