If you want to get to work in, oh, say 2 seconds, then the Bloodhound SSC may be for you. The Minister of State for Science and Innovation in the UK has launched the effort to build this super fast car in the hopes that it will increase interest in science. Of course, once you get interested in science, you will end up mixing paint pigments as part of a color test for a major corporation. Okay, maybe not – but working on this thing would be super cool.
The previous record is being held by Thrust SSC with an average speed of 763.035 MPH. Yeah, not too shabby. Here’s great footage of that historic craft:
The Bloodhound SCC will attempt to leapfrog the Thrust SSC by an amazing 31% increase. That’s pretty insane. To do it, the Bloodhound will accelerate from rest using an EJ-200 jet engine, taking it up to 300mph. After that, the rocket will ignite, and fire simultaneously with the jet engine to reach the amazing 1,000 MPH speeds with 2.0 Gs of force. The craft will incorporate winglets near the wheels to keep load balanced to the wheels so that the vehicle is stable during the entire run. Not bad for a mach 1.4 car!
Btw, looks like this is for the manned land speed record. Here is the HHSTT 6,453 MPH unmanned land speed record:
