Every once in a while something comes along that really makes an impression. Microvision’s first laser projector, named Show WX, is that kind of product. That’s because it is ridiculously small, driven by lasers, and fairly inexpensive.
Because the ShowWX first laser projector doesn’t use lenses, it is always in focus. No manual adjustment is necessary. The resolution is WVGA or 848 x 480. That’s not bad. The projection distance can run anywhere from 6 inches to 100 inches, with the image size running the same.
The contrast is 500:1 with a brightness of 10 lumens. Obviously, you need a dark room to see this thing. It is 1/2 inch thick, 2 inches wide, and 4 inches long. And it weighs a staggering 4 ounces! It has composite (tv-out), RGB, and 3.5 audio jack stereo pass through connections. Power will run for 2 hours, but can be recharged through micro USB. And the battery is user replaceable. And there was much rejoicing!
Now, the uses for this type of thing are endless. Can you say family vacation? And what’s even more exciting is that Microvision is talking to vendors for incorporation into other devices like cell phones and the like. Now, they are going to look to miniaturize the hardware more and more to make those things doable. This makes travel business presentations so much more convenient. And it would totally wow folks.
And, get this, once it hits the consumer market (later this year), it will run for around $250! Here’s a video on it. Remember, the lines show up on the video b/se of the video itself – not the projector.

Hard to believe that Microvision’s Pico Projector is still flying under the radar, given its unique selling point – NO NEED TO FOCUS! – and the fact that in little more than three months it’s going to be available on the market. Too bad the timing is a little off, given current economic circumstances, but Microvsion couldn’t do much about that.
