Ro15-4513 Makes Drunk People Sober

So here’s the scenario.  You go out with a bunch of friends.  Your week has absolutely sucked and you want to blow off some steam.  You go to a concert and are having a total blast.  You lose track of time, you lose track of your drinks – heck, you lose track of what planet you are on.  Doh – it’s time to go home and you are plastered.  Well, your friends could drive you home, but you live like twenty minutes  in the other direction.  Take a cab – nah!  You just pop a very precise dose of Ro15-4513 and now you are totally sober.  You better get going because you have 30 minutes to get home before your drunkeness comes back!

So, why the heck have you not heard about Ro15-4513 before?  Especially since it’s been around since 1984.  Yep, 1984.  Hoffman-La-Roche developed it as an alcohol antidote for poisoning cases.  It was developed after such drugs were developed for benzodiazepine poisoning, like flumazenil.

So, again, why in the heck haven’t you seen or heard about Ro15-4513.  Yeah, sounds like a code name.  Well, it’s because it has some very distinct problems.  First, Ro15-4513 has a very short half life, so its effect aren’t very long lasting.  In fact, the person taking it would likely revert back to drunkeness once the effect wore off, in about half an hour.  Also, Ro15-4513 has to be dosed very carefully, which is something a drunk person would probably not do very well.  If too much Ro15-4513 is taken, the person would experience severe anxiety and then ultimately convulsions and death.

Ro15-4513 also does not decrease the alcohol levels in the cells.  That could mean that individuals taking Ro15-4513 could make themselves toxically sick with alcohol and not know it.  Or, they could drive somewhere too long and become very drunk while driving.  The possibilities are not very good.

So, even though Ro15-4513 has been developed and could be used in some ways, it’s not very likely you will ever see it.  Also, researchers still don’t fully understand how it works.  And that makes the possibility of coming up with a safer alternative much less likely.

But, there has been some talk of developing alternatives to alcohol that would give the same desired effects and none of the bad side effects.  Now, if you have studied drugs at all, you will know that that is a total pipe dream.  Ten years after that drug would be released, it would be discovered that it causes your genitals to wither or some such nonsense.

For now, the best alternative is common sense.  Man, are we in trouble!

I have been in four rear end collisions, all of them were caused by a drunk driver. Today I’m totally disabled and there is never a minute that I don’t know pain shooting through my back. I have had four back fusions, two laminectomies , and one day surgeries to many to mention. The first accident took place when I was 27 because of alcohol and stupid people who don’t know when not to drive. I will never know what it is like to have a normal life again. This has coasted me a marriage, my carrier and the right to work and enjoy a good standard of living. I now have to live on a monthly income that doesn’t even come close to what I brought home weekly. Because one driver was late picking his wife up at the train station he leaves the bar he was in starts his car and runs it into the back of my car at a very high speed, it totaled my sub compact. Hey,drink up it only hurts the other guy!
