I will make this very clear: I love this metal detector. I am an unabashed treasure hunting & historical geek meister. I would specifically be called a coin shooter. And the Tesoro Compadre is a really fun metal detector.
Tesoro is known for it’s discriminating circuitry. And I definitely agree with that assessment. The first thing you need to know is that the Tesoro Compadre is very very affordable. You can pick these up in the range of $149-$200. Talk about affordable. And talk about a value.
When I first unboxed the Tesoro I was disappointed. It honestly looks like a toy. It is very small, very light, and has one knob. I was thinking, “Okay, I knew this, but it’s unnerving when you look at it.” You will find that this adds up to simplicity, durability, sensitivity, and stamina. Stamina? Yep, because this thing is so light, you don’t wear out. You hardly notice it when you swing it.
Now, the coil is small at 5.75 inches. But, that allows you to zero in on those rings and coins. I was amazed how quickly I was grabbing coins. Remember, you have to learn proper search pattern and recognition technique. You can eliminate a lot of trash digging when you do that. Also, you have to be able to research sites. Don’t expect to get old stuff in new parks, etc. You have to work still – but the Tesoro Compadre finishes the work! I’m very serious about this. It’s an incredibly fun and easy to use metal detector that I give 4 1/2 stars.
