VTAB1008 Vizio Tablet

Well, that time of year for gift joy is fastly approaching.  Vizio steps into the tablet space with their mid tier $240 VTAB1008.  If budget is on your mind, and you want open, you may want to give it a try.

Let me talk first impression here since it’s what we all have.  The VTAB1008 is heavier than I expected.  It feels solid.  That can be good or bad depending on who you talk to.  I like it personally.  I don’t think it’s unreasonably heavy at 1.2 pounds.  You can find some lighter ones out there.  But this is middle tier.  And that is what you are going to get.  If you want something faster, pay the money.  But, if you want something that is pretty nice and cheap – this works.

One nice design feature of the VTAB1008 is that when you turn the tablet, the controls flip on the screen.  The screen is nice and watching netflix is fun.  This tablet can also function as a remote, albeit a giant one.  But it may be a nice feature to have, I guess.  The Android market, of course, puts all those apps at your finger tips.  The tablet does run Android 2.3, but it has been skinned to look more like Vizio’s TV interfaces.  I actually like it.

The one thing I immediately noticed, however, is that the Vizio tablet is a little slow on some operations.  I wonder if their customizations actually hurt them here.  The screen is nice, but angles sometimes are a problem.  Overall, though, good product for the money.  And actually, Costco was selling these at around $180.  That’s pretty hard to beat.
